my dreams have been most enjoyable of late. last week i dreamt about my art, and last night, i dreamt one of my kids came to visit me. they don't, usually. so it was a nice surprise. then i woke up. hot and sneezing. couldn't open the window, had no kleenex. so i got up, took a shower, and got dressed for the day.
two weeks ago, i found my grandpa's billfold. it still has the photo of my grandma in it. i never met either of them. but i know she could sing and play the piano, and he both provided and cooked the meat (usually wild game) for supper every night--he said she had enough to do taking care of their seven children without a lot of feather plucking or skinning on top of it. when there was no pheasant or duck or fish, he'd go out and shoot a few squirrels or rabbits. his billfold used to have a receipt from the grocery store in it, too. that's gone. don't know where.

I haven't had a dream in AGES.
ReplyDeleteI love that photo.
i haven't dreamed in ages, either. but all of a sudden, here they are.
ReplyDeletei have to take a better photo of that photo!! :)
My goodness; as they say, that billfold was a blast from the past.
ReplyDeleteYour grandfather was obviously one of a kind to do the cooking. I didn't know they made men like that in those days. My grandfather's idea of cooking was to walk across the street to the grocery store, buy a pie and eat it by himself when my grandmother was talking to tourists.
darlene, he was one of a kind. he insisted that all his girls learn bookkeeping (or something similar) so they could support themselves if they didn't marry. he was the city attorney in their town, and the bishop's lawyer, and he taught law at the university. i'm so sorry i never met him. but i feel as if he's still with me. i'm just sorry as hell that i gave the hand-tailored woolen long johns that he wore hunting to my ex-husband. my mom gave them to me after my dad died and she was tossing out all of the stuff she had no room for and that nobody else wanted. i still have his diary (somewhere) with the notation in it "edgar died" on the day my uncle, his younger boy, died of a heart attack at the age of 40 or so. he supported edgar's children--put them all through school, including the university.
ReplyDeleteNo dreaming for me, I'm too busy sleeping! Nice photo. Do you know who's perched on her lap?
ReplyDeleteThe little guy on her leftt is my cousin Bill Haidler, and the blonde baby on her right is your Uncle Paul
ReplyDeleteI was just thinking how sad never to have met your grandpa or grandma when I realised that though I had a double set on my mother's side (their divorce meant I was not deprived) I never met my paternal grandparents.
ReplyDeleteBut how wonderful that you still have something so personal as a billfold.
