Tonight as I was walking home from the metro stop, one of El Busho's motorcades swept down Mass Ave on the way from Cheney's bunker to the White House. This was an especially impressive one, as traffic was stopped in all directions for blocks. There were the usual police cars with lights flashing, the black SUVs (for a change, they did NOT have Secret Service folks with ugly guns hanging out of the windows), ambulances....the whole meshugaas. And in the middle of the parade was the Big Black Limo with Blackened Windows and...tada...
the Papal flag flying on one front fender and the U.S. flag on the other. (This is how El Busho interprets the separation of church and state, I guess.)
These motorcades always remind me of Dickens's
A Tale of Two Cities, in which the royalty careen through the streets in their carriages and send the peasantry flying out of the way so as not to get run over.
Of course, the peasantry of Georgetown were not flying out of the way. They were trapped in traffic that was backed up all the way from Dupont Circle to Wisconsin Avenue.

It is so vulgar that the rulers ride in such luxury when the people who actually live in D.C. are going to the wall with the bad economy.

ReplyDeletepeggy: priests don't take vows of poverty unless they belong to a religious community that does. it's pretty much a technicality, anyway. the good sisters i know never lacked for worldly goods or services, which is hardly poverty. a vow of thrift would be more like it.
ReplyDeleteex-shammy....the popemobile was in service yesterday morning, but people complained that a) it whizzed past them too fast and b) it's really a mercedes. i've added today's great cartoon by Rob Rogers of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's editorial page.
