Populist Feminist Revolt and Heroic Filibuster Defeat Extremist Anti-Abortion Bill in Texas
Please note the last paragraphs of this article by Mark Karlin, editor of Buzz Flash at Truthout:
Personally, I want to dedicate the Texas triumph to the late Molly Ivins, a personal idol of mine. Over 12 years, I have interviewed just about every prominent progressive figure, nearly one a week, but nothing thrilled me like talking over the phone with Ivins.
In our long 2003 interview (read here), Ivins said of social conservatives in legislatures and Congress, "I think that there comes a point where they're ramming something down your throat that's just flat wrong and unfair; you just can't take it anymore."
Molly, because of the courage of Wendy Davis and the civic activism of thousands of pro-choice Texans and Americans, this victory over the forces of darkness is in your memory.
(Molly Ivins succumbed to cancer in 2007 at the age of 62.)
Here's Joan Walsh in Salon on Wendy Davis, Feminist Superhero
"...Ann Richards Is Smiling."
Not to forget Katha Pollitt at The Nation, either!
GO GIRLS! Thank you Molly and Wendy.
ReplyDeleteI loved Molly Ivins. I'm going swimming now, but when I come back I'll

Turned to 45 year old wonderful daughter, "Your generation needs to get more active on this issue." Reply, heard this before, "We're so busy Mom."
ReplyDeleteThanks for the link to Katha Pollitt since only know her via hard copy of Nation. This was on Twitter? You and Hattie's Web stay far more connected than myself reading 2 newspapers. Continue to be in awe of your site and its many parts.
NDB: Twitter is quite an exercise. and guess what else i read nowadays (though NOT for their editorials or Peggy Noonan's column:)?? the WSJ!
ReplyDeleteI have a lot of stuff on my blog so i can find it all in one place. gonna try the crossword one more time. gave up on it this a.m.
Hattie, btw, is way ahead of me on staying current. July starts tomorrow....enjoy!!
NDB: Hattie is way ahead of me. and I do learn a lot from Twitter. and guess what else I'm reading nowadays (minus their editorials and Peggy Noonan's commentary)? The weekend WSJ. One of the smartest, most liberal folks I know says he and his wife read it cover to cover every day. guess they like to know what the conservatives are up to.
ReplyDeleteI do enjoy the huge variety of coverage
anyway...hope you and the weaver are well and happy! m.e.
CC: Molly Ivins's departure has left a huge hole in my brain and heart. Nobody else now has her pizzazz.
