Today in DC, there were swarms of POLICE all over by the Mall when I drove a friend to the hospital for a test. Hmmm...we thought...maybe the President was taking the folks from China to the National Gallery of Art or something. Hah.
On my way home, the streets were either blocked or jammed with LITTLE CHILDREN (most likely Catholics, if the names of their schools and the priests--priests!!!??--walking among them meant anything). Their signs were a mixture of the words "PRO LIFE" and photos of fetuses.
There weren't all THAT many kids...I've been marching for causes in DC for almost 20 years now, and I'm getting a pretty good eye for crowds. If the POLICE herd them all down a few major streets and make sure their tour buses clog whatever other thoroughfares are free, as they did today, your group can foul things up pretty good and make it seem like you're holding the Rose Bowl Parade or something.
Sad. I was thinking of a phone call I got last evening asking me if $500 was something I would consider giving to Planned Parenthood. The caller was laughing with me by the time I got my breath. I explained to her that I was almost 75 years old and living on odd jobs & Social Security (until the Repugs snatch it away, that is), and that while I have "an excellent record of contributing," as the woman said, (thank you very much) there's no way I can come up with that sum now...jeez...all those zeros. My usual contributions to anything these days are about $5.
I got to thinking, in light of the economy, maybe Planned Parenthood should take a clue from the Catholics. Find a bunch of kids and spring them out of school for a day in exchange for a bus trip to DC and a chance to march around and disrupt traffic for a few hours, then see the Crime Museum or go to Carmines and get a haystack-sized serving of fried zucchini to go with their coca-colas.
Baby Jesus will love them even if they don't carry grizzly posters against abortion. The PRO CHOICE kids can demonstrate in favor of taking care of all the actual living children who have been born and are walking around being shot at or bombed or abused or underfed or not being cared for when they are sick. Why focus on fetuses? After all, the sewers of DC receive many fetuses every day when women who don't even realize they are pregnant have spontaneous abortions (that used to be the medical term), and the unique little clumps of cells get flushed away.
